Symptoms of An Abscessed Tooth

Updated: Jun 26

Tooth pain isn’t always an indication of a severe complication like an abscess but if you’re suffering from a painful toothache, this should be a heavy warning sign that something is definitely wrong somewhere! To be on the safe side, you’ll want to contact our team at Smiles of Lalor for a check-up!

But even if you’re not experiencing any pain, this doesn’t mean you’re in the clear! For more subtle signs of an abscessed tooth, here’s what you’ll want to watch out for:

Sensitivity to heat

Nerve damage is one of the most obvious signs of a complication and it usually feels far more different to other symptoms since your nerves become rather hypersensitive to hot substances. This is definitely a sign that your tooth is damaged in some manner.

Fistulas

Fistulas appear on the gum, right next to the tip of your root. They essentially look like small pimples and they’re filled with pus that drains out from the root in order to relieve any build up of pressure from the abscess.

Salty taste

Have you ever noticed a salty taste after a fistula bursts in your mouth? This is your abscess draining and can give way to a very metallic taste. Just because your fistula has burst doesn’t mean the situation is resolved, however. You’ll need a professional clean.

Pain when Biting

Find it too painful to bite? This is because an abscess has formed around your tooth and every time you try to bite, more pressure is applied to the area of swelling. In severe cases, you might find that you can’t bite down at all!

Cavities

Have you been putting off that filling? Your cavity might have gotten larger, spreading deeper into your tooth and infected the nerve as a whole. You can only determine this for sure by an X-ray, however.

At Smiles of Lalor, we’re more than equipped to make quick work of your abscessed tooth. You don’t have to suffer in pain or discomfort when a quick visit to the dentist can have you sorted. Call us today!
